SELECTWELL® CASE STUDY

Employee Engagement Is Key For Chronic Disease Management & Prevention

How to successfully prevent chronic disease to improve employee health and reduce

employer health plan costs.

INTRODUCTION

An employer contacted SelectWell® after experiencing increased incidences of chronic diseases (cardiovascular and diabetes) and concerns about employee well-being, lost productivity, and increased health plan costs. They offered Wellness Programs (Nutrition, Exercise, etc.), but saw no change in their incidence of chronic diseases. They knew Disease Management programs only help employees with confirmed chronic disease. They wanted to prevent chronic disease or, failing that,
slow its progression and reverse it when possible. Their assumption - PREVENTION could “unlock” desired productivity gains and decrease health plan costs. However, they realized EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT was the “key” to success.

OVERVIEW

The top chronic diseases, Cardiovascular and Diabetes, cost employers a combined $690B annually, split between $453B in direct medical costs and $237B in lost productivity. The growth of chronic diseases is on a steep decades-long upward trend and now includes a higher prevalence in younger employees. The rising incidence of chronic diseases, and the associated costs to health plans (health claims), screams for a new approach - The SelectWell® Program Approach.

APPROACH

The SelectWell® Program focuses on early detection of chronic health risks to manage and prevent
chronic disease. The program leverages personalized high-touch engagements including:

RESULTS

SelectWell® saved this employer $3900+ and improved productivity by 43 hours, on average, over a projected three year period per participating employee. SelectWell® advanced biomarker testing
was able to identify employees with early chronic health risks. With lab results consultations, employees became aware and understood their personal chronic health risks. Through health coaching, each prevented their risks from progressing to a chronic disease. The results were highly engaged employees who improved their overall health, lowered their individual health plan (health claim) costs, and increased their productivity levels.
