Helga Arminak, president of Arminak & Associates, has given some insight today into the types of inks that her customer have typically used in the past, and up to present, when determining the kind of ink that will print their logos and legal product information on the sides and labels of the bottles their product will come packaged in.

When choosing the appropriate ink for your customized cosmetic packaging, a variety of factors must first be considered,” explains Helga Arminak. “First, we have to consider the substrate (packaging surface) being used in the packaging product, and upon which the ink will be printed. You have to make sure the inks marry well to the substrate.”

Helga explains that waterborne inks can be used in most applications. “They are also the most prevalent out there,” details Helga.

“UV inks have have slightly mmore density to them, and offer not only a richer look, but more texture,” she continues.

“For the most textured look possible, screen printing provides a different and more thorough level of texture. If the objective is to make nuances of the customized bottle stand out, this is a great option.”

Although the price of the inks and the processes that embed or print them onto the bottle can definitely be a factor of slight revelance, inks are not particularly a cost driver in the decision making process, therefore packagers have a threshold to work within when creatively conceiving a particular product’s look or their product offering’s theme.

Cosmetic packagers often choose rotary silkscreen printing upon their custom cosmetics bottles for its aesthetic value and texture. “The benefit of rotary silkscreen is you can lay down more ink allowing for a raised image, and more textured feel,” explains Helga.
“I think the biggest jump price-wise, which really isn’t much in the scheme of things, is when you go from UV printed inks to screen printing,” she continues.

“Screen printing is important on clear labels so you get greater opacity. If you are printing on a clear label, you would want to use a screen, especially if you are printing colors on a clear label. It gives it more vibrancy.”

Reasons to choose UV letter over traditional inks may include that UV letter lays down a heavier coat weight for more opacity. Rotary silkscreen printing gives a more opaque white. The white is used graphically or to back up other colors that are being overprinted. It allows the top color to be more true and the appearance of opacity. For example, if you print green without white it will be transparent. It won’t stand out.”
The cosmetic market is constantly moving forward and looking for ways to create innovative products, and the packaging of that product must be innovative and eye-catching as well. According to Helga, when choosing ink for cosmetic packaging, “they are looking for more line screens and they are looking for images to be more photographic.”

“Vividness and uniqueness sell the products in the cosmetics industry,” Helga says.
