The Retail market has been hit hard over the last 4 years as the economy continues to plunge further into the spiral of pre-recession turmoil.
But as the rain falls on one parade, a rainbow appears over the horizon, landing at the doorway of a budding trade focused on the smart shopper and bargain hunter - always on the look out for top quality products with bottom shelf prices.
Enter into the world of Resale.Unlike Thrift shops, Salvation Army and Goodwill stores the resale outfit caterers to a clientele that required name brand items but doesn’t want to pay the big bucks.
The National Association of Resale & Thrift Shops put out figures from April 2007 through 2008 representing 185 stores in a survey showing the resale business had an increase in sales of 75%. 80% of these sales dollars were from new customers while the stores suppliers shot up 65%. Also noteworthy was the decrease of sales of just 10%.
The numbers tell a very encouraging story for this venue in the consumer trade but it also has a sadder aspect as well.Resale stores do most of their business on a consignment basis. The arrangement works well for both parties as the store doesn’t have to outlay cash for stock and the supplier still retains ownership of the product until time of purchase and then receives a percentage of the sale. Truly a win-win situation.
However as the market has seen a rise in both it’s consumer spending the number of people bringing their clothes in to be sold has also increased due to the need of the supplier for income rather than just trying to unload old clothes they no longer want or need. This aspect of the business is a direct reflection of our current economic down turn, requiring individuals to sell top quality name brand items, clothes that would still have a viable life as part of the supplier’s wardrobe but now has to be let go to help supplement income.
One person’s lose is an-other’s gain.
Prices for these named brand items such as True Religion jeans, Gucci, Hobo, Chico and so many more, can be as high as 75% off. At one such store, Lucky You Resale Boutique in North Hollywood, you can find usually expensive designer jeans that regularly sell for $300 for just $35. Coach loafers and Gucci sandals, normally running over $100 a pair can be had for $25.
The selection and prices are a definite upside to shopping at these kinds of outlets. Quality of these “slightly used” items tend to remain high as well since these kinds of stores are only interested in name brand clothing that is in the best shape, unlike a Thrift shop or Salvation Army where you rarely see such high priced name tags and the condition of the clothing can be the ragged side.
If getting named designer wear at bargain basement prices is your thing and you don’t mind doing a little hunting or that it’s not virgin product, then Resale stores are the place to go.
For what you would spend on one outfit at a department store or famous retail shop, you could probably walk out of the Resale store with an entire closet full of today’s hottest fashion labels.
