Wilshire Law Firm’s Los Angeles motorcycle attorney Bobby Saadian Esq. of Los Angeles-based Wilshire Law Firm reports to us this week with an alarming statistic within the scope of what he wishes to highlight for his readers.

While Mr. Saadian tends to look at all the statistics, for purposes regarding the tactical and strategic representation of his clients, certain statistics jump out at him as relevant to the modern day on a more broad scale. This statistic is no exception, especially considering how much of his business comes by way of clientele who have experienced some kind of motorcycle accident in the regional Los Angeles area.

According to statistics released by Web Bike World as of 2003, the last year that statistics of this nature were compiled, motorcycle ownership for riders between the ages of 40 and 49 grew from 16.3% to nearly 28% within a thirteen year period, from 1990 to 2003.

Motorcycle ownership also increased by about 25% in the 50 and over age group during the same period. The median age (50% over and 50% under) rose from 32 to 41 years old during the same period, and the average jumped from 33.1 years old to 40.2. This is a vast increase in riders of this demographic, and pertinent to the point here.

Overall, between 1995-2004, the number of registered motorcycles rose by 1,883,679, an increase of 48%.

However, another recently revealed study shows that between the years of 1997 and 2004, the estimated fatality rate per 100 million motorcycled miles traveled has nearly doubled. In 1997, this statistic stood at 22.73 fatalities. Today, it has risen to nearly 40, or 39.89. This should be the focus of concern, because the numbers are sobering.

“Riders these days simply aren’t practicing safe or sound riding measures to enough of an extent,” professes Los Angeles motorcycle lawyer Bobby Saadian, Esq. “In my opinion, riders need to be more aware of what’s going on around them on the roads, especially considering the size of the vehicles that frequent Los Angeles roads these days, and also considering the frequency with which vehicles of this size are seen in this part of the state.”

Mr. Saadian doesn’t stop short of anticipating why these fatalities are occurring so much more frequently now than they were back then. “Plainly put, riders are riding too fast, not giving themselves enough time to stop, and are not observing thoroughly enough what cars around them are doing,” he predicts.

“In essence, as a motorcycle rider, it’s you and your two wheels versus anywhere from two to four tons of steel, powered by a driver that’s got much less to lose than the motorcycle they’re about to plow into,” Bobby continues. “You can’t anticipate that anyone is ever looking out for your own interests the way that you might. However, add a couple tons of metal, 60 mph and two drivers on a collision course to the equation, and it just becomes that much uglier.”
