Not since 1987 has General Motors produced their classic car/truck, the El Camino. Chevrolet first introduced the vehicle in 1959 to compete with the Ford Ranchero but dropped the model twenty eight years later when it became apparent that the S-10 pickup truck was the choice of consumers. Recently, GM began planning to re-introduce the El Camino along with a sport truck by Pontiac, the G8 ST. Suddenly, without notice, they changed direction and killed the short lived program.
What would drive Chevrolet to suddenly change their minds? There are numerous reasons for the change but the deciding factor was that they did not feel that the El Camino would sell and, in their present financial condition, GM really needs only models that will appeal to consumers. Why did they believe that the car-truck would not sell?
The 2010 El Camino was to be introduced with a low mileage V-8 and, without doubt, consumers would be reluctant to buy a gas hungry vehicle.
The size of the vehicle would also be a deterrent. It is not big enough to be a truck and it is too large to be a car. Other current models, like SUVs and pickup trucks, are more effective and would sell better.
Perhaps the biggest factor that killed the re-introduction was that it was not projected to be a big seller and GM needs a big seller. Certain models are built without the expectation of a large sales volume, like the Dodge Challenger, but GM can no longer afford to take this type of chance on a new vehicle.
Now that plans have been scrapped for the 2010 El Camino, there aren’t any options available to buy, sell, or lease a new one. However, there are a couple of ideas that might be a suitable alternative.
Perhaps you are desperate to get a stylish car-truck and had your heart set on a new El Camino. Whether you were planning on buying or leasing, Pontiac is still scheduled to introduce a sport car-truck, the G8 ST in 2010. Initially, there were plans to name this vehicle the El Camino in an effort to retain the legendary name but that idea has been dropped.
If that is not a suitable solution, there are many vintage El Caminos that are for sale, traded, or sold for parts. Numerous El Camino car clubs exist that promote this car, provide a forum to buy or sell, and preserve the legacy. Maybe an older model would suffice.
There has been some speculation that Chevy might bring the El Camino back in 2011. However, significant changes will need to be made. One of its most popular markets was the Los Angeles area but, in order to be successful, it will need to appeal more consumers. Better gas mileage will need to be offered along with a larger cargo area in order to sell. The El Camino will need to create its own niche to attract buyers from SUVs, pickup trucks, and even minivans.
